The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
