The United States monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.
Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the number of employment gains created to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.
The number of jobs added to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline
Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release once the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had previously attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Price Data Reveals Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are rising, albeit slowly. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
