No fewer than 13 passengers killed and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's major public works projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the country's president.

The leader reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term ended the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's strategic agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The development of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its duties in civilian works. They were completed at an accelerated pace, beating forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked ongoing questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition called for an prompt pause in the development and management of all such projects.

This pause was requested until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."

In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these vital initiatives.
